Caroline Atkin, LMFT

Caroline is a collaborative & strengths based therapist who works from a systemic perspective; she focuses on how your personal relationships, behavior patterns and life choices are interconnected with the “systems” that you are a part of – your relationships, family, socioeconomic class, physical environment, life experiences, etc. She works thoughtfully with her clients to help them find a balance between taking care of themselves and living a life that feels deeply meaningful while accounting for all of the different parts of your life that play a factor in tending to your individual needs and maintaining fulfilling relationships.

Caroline works to make sure that she creates a warm and inviting therapeutic space in which you feel safe to authentically show up as/express yourself. She has experience working with a wide variety of presenting issues, particularly relationship issues, communication skills, anxiety, self-esteem, depression, goal setting and stress management. She also has experience working with clients experiencing grief, chronic pain, and healing from past trauma. Caroline particularly enjoys working with couples and adult individuals navigating life-stage transitions and personal relationships. She continuously works to be an ally and safe space for all people, especially LGBTQ+, BIPOC, body positive, sex positive & kink, open relationships and non-monogamy communities. At her core, Caroline believes all people deserve equal treatment, fulfillment, happiness and empathetic support.

Caroline has her Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Edgewood College in Wisconsin and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Science (Human Development and Family Studies) from Indiana University-Bloomington. She is a ‘Prepare & Enrich’ Certified Facilitator for couples – including couples interested in pre-marital aspects of counseling. Caroline is experienced and trained in all of the primary couples therapy clinical modalities, including, the evidence-based couples counseling framework – Gottman Couples Therapy. She also is passionate about the ‘Food & Mood’ approach, as a mind-body connection based approach – which closely examines the impact our diet (and our relationship with food) has on our mental and emotional health.

Caroline truly values authenticity in her relationships with her clients and feels that it is imperative to use therapeutic self-disclosure to create a space in which you feel you aren’t opening up and being vulnerable with a stranger. Caroline sees herself as a collaborative therapist, offering tools and education to offer insight and assistance for her clients but ultimately, she believes her clients are the experts of their own personal experiences. Caroline strives to work with her clients to leverage their natural talents and abilities to help them lead a happier, healthier, more balanced life and to achieve their personal goals. She focuses on meeting clients where they are, offering different techniques and therapeutic strategies based on the specific needs of the client – she thoughtfully offers solution-focused strategies, explores family of origin patterns, supports the development of boundaries and coping strategies and works to increase positive self-talk and self-compassion for her clients.

In her free time, Caroline loves spending quality time with her husband and 3 ‘fur babies’ – 2 sweet dogs and a cute tabby cat. She also enjoys spending time hiking, weaving, painting, seeing live music, organizing and hosting parties with her friends.
